twitter_iowatech_hashtagIowa technology developments and companies are sometimes overlooked. I have been in the technology community in Iowa for 15 years and watched it scream for attention and not get the recognition it deserves.

I recall when the only time we heard about technology companies in Iowa was when they were moving out of state or when a  few were attracted to move here – but very little about the companies inventing, succeeding and helping other companies to grow every day via their services in the technology space.

The Technology Association of Iowa has certainly worked hard in the last few years to change that perception with great events like the Prometheus Awards and assisting with publicity and lobbying for our industry. Newer sites, such as TechSentry, are also working to promote Iowa technology and get the word out.

A proposition for raising awareness of Iowa technology news

Today, we would like to propose a very simple but powerful idea to use within the Twitter community, which is very active throughout the state. We would like to see Iowa technology companies and tech professionals unify around the #iowatech hashtag. The goal in using this hashtag in tweets is to promote sharing news, articles, resources and events related to technology developments here in Iowa.

While many of you reading this are savvy enough to find these announcements on your own via the people you follow, etc. we hope that this simple adoption will help group these announcements together and allow some of the more traditional news outlets and others in the media and government to easily find and promote Iowa technology news.
